Step 1: Visit the Higher Education Financing Portal (HEF Portal)

The First step is for you to visit the HEF Portal using the link provided. HEF Portal is basically the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) new system for applying Loans and Scholarships in Kenya and getting the much needed Government funding in your college or university education in Kenya.

Step 2: Click on the Register Button on HEF Portal

Next, click on the Register button so as to begin the process of registration or creating a new HEF Portal Account. You will have to specify If you have a National ID Number so as to proceed to creating your HEF Account. You need to ensure that you have your National ID Card in this step. In the question:

Step 3: Validation of ID Number, First Name and Type of ID

This is the most important step that validates the details of your ID Card. You will be required to enter your ID Number, First Name as per your ID and the type of ID Card (Kenyan citizen with Kenyan ID or Foreign resident with Alien ID).

Since we are creating / registering a Kenyan citizen HEF Portal Account, select the first option. Once you have entered the above details correctly, click on the Validate button so as to validate the ID Number, First Name and Type of ID.

Step 4: Enter and Confirm Email Address together with Password

In this step, if the details in step 4 are validated successfully, the HEF Portal will display your full names and ID Number. At this point you are supposed to enter a valid email address, password and confirm the same. There is captcha challenge that you fill to confirm that you are human. Once you have filled in the details, click on the Register button.

Step 5: HEF Portal Account Activation

After successfully registering in step 4 above, you will get a successful notification message telling you to activate your HEF Portal Account within the next 24 hours. You have to do this as first as possible so as to make your HEF Portal Account active.

Step 6: HEF Portal Activation Email Notification

An activation email will be sent to your email address that you need to click so as to activate your HEF Portal Account. Upon clicking the Activate HEF Portal Account link, you will be re-directed to the HEF Portal account where a message will be displayed “Your account has been Activated, Log in with your email and password.”

Step 7: Successful Registration of HEF Portal Account 

Once you have clicked on the activation email link sent to your email address, your new HEF Portal Account will be activated and will now become active and you can start applying for various Loans and Scholarships that are on offer.
