National Treasury Urges Business Community to Proactively Engage in Tax Payments and Compliance Initiatives

The Principal Secretary (PS) for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, CBS, has urged the business community to actively fulfill their tax obligations and lead compliance initiatives, facilitating the government’s delivery of essential services and developmental projects.

Dr. Kiptoo made these remarks during a stakeholder engagement event organized by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in collaboration with the Eldoret Business Association. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revenue-oriented fiscal allocation, emphasizing the importance of patriotic tax contributions for fostering a fair and competitive business environment, stimulating economic growth, and achieving self-reliance.

Addressing the audience, Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey Wattanga highlighted KRA’s adoption of a more service-oriented approach to tax collection, aiming to simplify tax payment processes and gather honest feedback from businesses to enhance service delivery. He emphasized KRA’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders in implementing tailored compliance support programs responsive to taxpayers’ needs, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement in achieving revenue targets.

Mr. Wattanga, accompanied by Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Mrs. Rispah Simiyu, EBS, and other senior staff members, emphasized the agency’s commitment to improving taxpayer education, staff integrity, and the successful implementation of programs like Tax Amnesty and eTIMS.

Mr. Jackson Kiprono, Chairman of the Eldoret Business Association, welcomed the PS’s call to action and pledged continuous collaboration with KRA to address taxation challenges and bolster tax compliance. His sentiments were echoed by Dr. Erick Rutto, President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who committed to partnering with business associations to advocate for policy proposals that promote domestic resource mobilization and stimulate Kenya’s economic growth.

KRA is actively conducting nationwide stakeholder engagement forums to enhance tax literacy and foster positive attitudes toward tax payment.
