If you are an unemployed individual in Kenya with a KRA PIN Number, you are required to file your KRA Returns on or before the elapse of the set 30th of June deadline by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). By being unemployed, it means that you don’t have any income being derived from employment in Kenya, therefore this results in the fact that unemployed individuals need to file KRA Nil Returns on iTax (KRA Portal).
So, if you know that you are unemployed, always remember that you are required to file your KRA Returns failure to which a penalty of Kshs. 2,000 will be imposed for late filing of KRA Returns. To be able to file KRA Returns for Unemployed, you need to ensure that you have with you both the KRA PIN Number and KRA Password (iTax Password). You are going to need these two important credentials so as to be able to access your iTax (KRA Portal) account and file KRA Returns for Unemployed individuals in Kenya.
As a reminder, if you are unemployed, it means you don’t have any employment income and should file KRA Nil Returns. How To File KRA Returns For Unemployed
Step 1: Visit iTax (KRA Portal)

The process of filing KRA Returns for unemployed individuals in Kenya starts by first visit iTax (KRA Portal) using https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
Step 2: Login Into iTax (KRA Portal)

Next, you need to enter your KRA PIN Number, KRA Password (iTax Password), solve the arithmetic question (security stamp) and then click on the “Login” button to access your iTax (KRA Portal) account.
Step 3: Click on Returns then File Nil Return

Once you are logged into iTax (KRA Portal) successfully, click on the “Returns” menu tab and then click on “File Nil Return” from the drop down menu list that will appear to begin the process of filing KRA Returns for Unemployed individuals in Kenya.
Step 4: Select KRA Tax Obligation

In this step, you need to select the KRA Tax Obligation that you are filing the KRA Returns for on iTax (KRA Portal). Since we are filing KRA Returns for Unemployed individuals in Kenya, we select “Income Tax – Resident Individual” as the KRA Tax Obligation then click on the “Next” button.
Step 5: Fill In The Income Tax Resident Individual Nil e-Return Form

Next, you need to fill in the Income Tax Resident Individual Nil e-Return Form by selecting the “Return Period From” which will pre-fill the “Return Period To” i.e if we enter 01/01/2023 it will pre-fill the return period to as 31/12/2023. Once you have filled in the Income Tax Resident Individual Nil e-Return Form, click on the “Submit” button.
Step 6: Download KRA Returns Receipt

The last step in the process of filing KRA Returns for unemployed individuals using iTax (KRA Portal) is to download the KRA Returns Receipt i.e. e-Return Acknowledgement Receipt. To download the e-Return Acknowledgement Receipt, you need to click on the link labeled “Download Returns Receipt” to download and save the e-Return Acknowledgement Receipt.

The above steps form the process that all unemployed individuals in Kenya who have active KRA PIN Number but no employment need to follow in order to file their KRA Returns online using iTax (KRA Portal).
